20 TIPS FOR OVERCOMING A CRISIS FASTER & MORE EFFECTIVELY

By Dr. Nella Godfryd

We all face challenges in life, but for many, an unexpected crisis can be devastating.

A crisis is a turning point in the course of anything, for example, your career, business, health, or life. It is a critical time, stage, or event where there is great danger, trouble, or suffering.

A crisis can occur in various forms, for example, the loss of a job, valuable asset, or significant relationship; sudden illness or imminent death; and a global pandemic, such as the coronavirus virus that directly affected over two million people with too many deaths.

Although a crisis often threatens to result in unpleasant circumstances, the change that follows can be for better or worse.

While we do not control our reality, we can influence it by the way we think, speak, and act. God is in control, but we have to do our part.

You can use this turning point to become a better you and have a better life. You can learn from it and make the necessary changes to live fully, succeed faster, and enjoy the rest of your life to the max!

I have experienced many crises in several areas of my life, including my finances, health, and relationships. However, with the help of God and others, I was able to overcome them and achieve most of my goals.

I have written these tips to help you, based on my research, experiences, and those of others. There is no fluff; only useful tips to help you overcome the crisis you are experiencing faster and more effectively.

My prayer is that you overcome the crisis you are experiencing quickly, become a better you, have a better life, live fully, succeed faster, and enjoy your life to the max!

Here are the 20 tips to help you overcome a crisis faster and more effectively:

  1. Put God first and engage in spiritual practices, especially prayer and reading spiritual literature such as the Bible. God is in control and He can help you.
  2. Acknowledge the crisis. Recognize it for what it is so you can overcome it faster.
  3. Accept the situation and your responsibility for overcoming the crisis. No matter what or who caused the crisis, you have to do your part to overcome it.
  4. Assess the situation as calmly as possible. Do not panic or be afraid because this will distort your ability to examine your findings and think clearly.
  5. Assess your assumptions about the situation. What did you assume about yourself, the event that caused the crisis, life etc. before the crisis? Are your assumptions still valid?
  6. Reflect on the situation and the implications for you, your life, and on others. How will you and various areas of your life be affected? How will this affect others? Also think about your career and business if applicable.
  7. Communicate with others. Get and share timely updates, and seek other perspectives.
  8. Look at the situation objectively from various perspectives. When you do, you may remember and discover various things that will help you. Also remember, change is constant. This too shall pass.
  9. Change your perspective based on your findings. Your perspective is the way you see things. If you want to make progress you have to make changes. When you change your thoughts, you can change your life.
  10. Learn from the situation. Every crisis presents reminders, lessons to be learned, and opportunities for improvement.
  11. Explore your options before you make any major decisions. Take as much time as you need, but do not procrastinate. Remember, you want to overcome the crisis as soon as possible.
  12. Develop a plan for overcoming the crisis as quickly as you can. This should be based on your research, knowledge, skills, experience, opportunities etc.
  13. Acquire the knowledge and skills for implementing your plan as soon as possible where necessary. No one knows everything about anything, and there is always room for improvement.
  14. Get support and accountability to help you as necessary. This will help you overcome the crisis faster and more effectively.
  15. Implement your plan for overcoming the crisis with whatever resources you have at this time and do your best to achieve your goals, new or existing.
  16. Manage your resources wisely, especially your time and finances. Set your priorities and do first things first.
  17. Increase your faith and build your confidence to help you overcome the crisis and succeed faster. Remember, “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6), and “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:20)
  18. Manage stress and anxiety and practice good self-care despite how you feel, with proper diet, exercise, relaxation, sleep, hygiene etc. Do something you enjoy every day, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
  19. Be grateful for what you still have and count your blessings often. This will remind you that as difficult as it may be for you, all is not lost.
  20. Focus on the positive. Try to find something good in the situation. Be optimistic and trust God to help you overcome the crisis as quickly as possible. Remember, “God is our refuge and strength. A very present help in times of trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) Tell yourself that you will overcome this crisis, be better than you were before, and have an even better life. “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26)
